It’s probably one of the most common questions people ask before signing up for NEBOSH: “How difficult is it?” And it’s a fair question.
The NEBOSH National General Certificate is a respected health and safety qualification, so yes, you’ll need to put the work in. But you don’t need to already be a health and safety expert to get started.
Do I need previous health and safety experience?
No. People come to the NEBOSH General Certificate from all sorts of backgrounds. You might already have some responsibility for health and safety at work. You might be a manager or supervisor. Or you might be looking to take your first step towards a career in health and safety. You’re not expected to walk through the door knowing everything. That’s what the course is for.
What makes NEBOSH challenging?
There’s quite a lot to learn. You’ll explore how health and safety is managed, how risks are identified and controlled, the legal responsibilities businesses have and how good health and safety works in practice. But NEBOSH isn’t simply about remembering pages of information. You need to understand what you’re learning and be able to apply it to realistic workplace situations. And that’s often where learners need the most support.
What are the assessments like?
The current NEBOSH National General Certificate is split into two units: GNC1 and GNC2.
GNC1 is assessed through a digital, scenario-based, open-book assessment. This means you can refer to your learning materials and relevant resources during the assessment, rather than having to remember everything from memory.
But open-book doesn't mean you won't need to prepare.
The assessment is designed to test how well you can apply what you've learned to a realistic workplace situation. You'll need to recognise the health and safety issues within the scenario, understand what the law requires, find relevant information and explain why it matters.
That's an important part of what you'll learn during the course. It's not just about understanding health and safety principles, but also knowing where to find reliable information and how to use it to make informed decisions.
GNC2 is the practical part of the qualification, where you'll complete a workplace risk assessment. This gives you the opportunity to demonstrate how you can identify hazards, assess risks and recommend appropriate control measures in a real working environment.
Ultimately, the assessments are about showing that you can put your knowledge into practice, rather than simply repeat what you've been taught.
What if I haven’t studied for years?
This is another big worry for a lot of learners. Maybe it’s been 10, 15 or even 20 years since you last sat in a classroom. That doesn’t mean NEBOSH isn’t for you.
Good training shouldn’t leave you trying to make sense of complicated terminology on your own. It should give you the opportunity to ask questions, talk through real examples and gradually build your understanding and confidence.
Give yourself time
NEBOSH does require commitment. There will be learning outside the classroom, and trying to cram everything in at the last minute is unlikely to make the experience particularly enjoyable. Give yourself time to go back over what you’ve learned. Ask questions when something doesn’t make sense. And most importantly, try to relate the learning back to real workplaces rather than simply trying to memorise information. That’s when things often start to click.
Difficult doesn't mean unachievable
The NEBOSH General Certificate is designed to challenge you. It should. You’re learning how to make decisions that can have a real impact on people’s health and safety at work. But challenging and unachievable are two very different things.
With the right teaching, support and preparation, NEBOSH can take you from feeling unsure about health and safety to understanding what you’re looking for, why it matters and what to do about it.
