The NEBOSH National General Certificate (NGC) is the most widely held health and safety qualification in the UK. It provides a broad understanding of health and safety principles and is essential for anyone looking to build a career in occupational safety, or for managers and supervisors who need to manage risk in the workplace.
What You’ll Learn
The NGC is assessed using the Open Book Examination (OBE) format and is divided into two units:
- NG1 - Management of Health and Safety: Health and safety management systems, risk assessment, leadership and worker involvement, monitoring and review, and the legal framework
- NG2 - Risk Assessment: A practical risk assessment of your own workplace, demonstrating your ability to identify hazards, evaluate risk, and recommend proportionate controls

Frequently Asked Questions
The OBE replaced the traditional exam in 2020. You receive a scenario-based question and have a set period to complete it using your course materials and notes. It tests your ability to apply knowledge to a realistic workplace situation rather than memorise facts.
NG2 is a practical risk assessment of a workplace of your own choosing - it does not have to be your own workplace. You identify hazards, evaluate risks, and recommend proportionate control measures. Your tutor provides guidance and feedback throughout the process. There is no formal exam - it is assessed by NEBOSH examiners based on your written submission.
No formal qualifications are required. The NGC is suitable for anyone with workplace experience, though a reasonable standard of English is needed as the assessments are written. If you are unsure whether the NGC is the right level for you, contact us and we can advise.
