Serene Safety is a NEBOSH Gold Learning Partner. The General Certificate is taught live online across the UK, on our own Microsoft Teams setup, with tutor phone support and a dedicated mailbox for assignment feedback. Classroom dates run in Norfolk.

The course itself is taught live by a Serene tutor. It is not a self-paced e-learning course. (Pre-course prep modules are self-paced.)

Course Overview

The NEBOSH National General Certificate (NGC) is the most widely held health and safety qualification in the UK. It provides a broad understanding of health and safety principles and is essential for anyone looking to build a career in occupational safety, or for managers and supervisors who need to manage risk in the workplace.

What You’ll Learn

The NGC is assessed using the Open Book Examination (OBE) format and is divided into two units:

NG1 - Management of Health and Safety: Health and safety management systems, risk assessment, leadership and worker involvement, monitoring and review, and the legal framework
NG2 - Risk Assessment: A practical risk assessment of your own workplace, demonstrating your ability to identify hazards, evaluate risk, and recommend proportionate controls

Before your course

A short checklist so day one runs smoothly. We send the pre-course pack two weeks before you start.

Photo ID for NEBOSH exam day (passport, driving licence, or work ID badge).
A reliable device and internet connection if attending virtually. Webcam on for sessions; headset recommended.
A quiet, well-lit space for virtual delivery. Closed-captions and read-aloud are available in portal accessibility settings.
Pre-course study pack arrives by email two weeks before start. Set aside two to three hours to read it before week one.
Notebook and pen alongside your laptop. Most delegates flip between digital notes and handwritten sketches for risk-assessment exercises.
NG2 risk assessment workplace: NGC's practical is on a real workplace. Pick somewhere you can access for the assessment in week two.
Travel and parking if you're joining us in person at a Norfolk venue. Address and parking notes are in your booking confirmation.

Upcoming Dates

NEBOSH NGC is 10 days of teaching, and you can take it in whichever format suits your schedule. Taught live by a tutor either way — virtually via Microsoft Teams or in the classroom at venues across Norfolk.

Block release

How and where is the NEBOSH General Certificate taught?

What is the NEBOSH NGC Open Book Examination (OBE)?

The OBE replaced the traditional exam in 2020. You receive a scenario-based question and have a set period to complete it using your course materials and notes. It tests your ability to apply knowledge to a realistic workplace situation rather than memorise facts.

How is the NG2 practical assessment completed?

NG2 is a practical risk assessment of a workplace of your own choosing - it does not have to be your own workplace. You identify hazards, evaluate risks, and recommend proportionate control measures. Your tutor provides guidance and feedback throughout the process. There is no formal exam - it is assessed by NEBOSH examiners based on your written submission.

Do I need any prior qualifications?

No formal qualifications are required. The NGC is suitable for anyone with workplace experience, though a reasonable standard of English is needed as the assessments are written. If you are unsure whether the NGC is the right level for you, contact us and we can advise.

What is the pass rate for the NEBOSH NGC?

NEBOSH does not publish provider-specific pass rates, but the national average is around 70-75% for NG1 and higher for NG2.

How much does the NEBOSH General Certificate cost?
